Blending Animal and Human Behavior

When my GrandChildren were 18 months and 3 years old, respectively; I visited for the first time in quite a while. They were shy and stood back with their Pitbull mix, Shorty Boy, trying to 'place' me. Friend? Foe? Gifter? or Grifter? They are wise little critters!

Shorty Boy was the first to leave the line-up, disappearing into the nursery, and returning with one of his plushy toys. Interestingly, it was the toy I had given him on my last visit, months earlier. He just stood there and held it in his mouth.

Nothing escaped my GrandDaughter. She looked at Shorty with the toy. Then at me. And immediately, ran away to the nursery. A few seconds later, she ran back with the plushy Horse I had given her on my last visit. That is when my GrandSon ran away. This 18 month old brought back with him the last gift I had given him - a soft, stuffed Dog.

The three of them just stood and stared at me. I sat down right there on the floor. Shorty picked up his toy, walked over to me, dropped it in my (now available) lap. The 3 year old did the same. The 18 month old came over to me, turned around, and backed up until he plopped down in my lap, toys and all.
