Carley Faughn, PhD, Senior Manager Animal Care

Dr. Carley Faughn has worked with canines, felines and nonhuman primates since 2007, merging her passion for comparative cognition, animal welfare and animal rescue. In March 2018, she transitioned from Dogtown manager at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary to senior manager of animal care. In this role, she continues to oversee Dogtown and its behavior team, as well as adoptions, the Sanctuarys animal care consultant, and the Sanctuarys wellbeing studies. Carley works with the Dogtown team to develop creative wellness plans and enrichment ideas to ensure that every dog has a good quality of life while still working on life skills for success in their new homes. In addition, she collaborates with Best Friends lifesaving centers and Best Friends Network partners to implement lifesaving programs and facilitate teachings about animal behavior and cognition. Before coming to Best Friends, she served as executive director of Acadiana Animal Aid AAA in Lafayette, Louisiana, for three years. She became the executive director at AAA just before completing her Ph.D. in cognitive science at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and after serving as a caregiver at the nonprofit animal rescue group for several years. Carley played an integral role in Lafayette committing to reach nokill by 2020.

Melissa Pezzuto, CPDTKA - Behavior Consultant Team Lead

Melissa Pezzuto, a certified professional dog trainer CPDTKA and Fear Free professional, leads the behavior team at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Kanab, Utah. She is responsible for working with caregivers and staff to implement training and management programs for Sanctuary residents. Melissa focuses on dogs new to the Sanctuary and helps to identify unique personalities and potential behavior challenges. In 2017, Melissa deployed to Houston, Texas, after Hurricane Harvey, where she was responsible for managing an emergency shelter caring for over 400 dogs. Melissa is active in the Best Friends shelter mentorship program, providing guidance to Best Friends Network partner shelters across the country. Before coming to Best Friends, Melissa resided in Wisconsin, where she was involved in training and rescue in several capacities. She was the director for the Wisconsin Boston Terrier Rescue, the enrichment coordinator for a local shelter, and a private trainer focusing on fearfree handling techniques.
